Continuous heavy rains trigger flood crisis
This year's 20th typhoon "Trami" hit Hainan, bringing heavy rainfall for several consecutive days. Since September 26, many places in Hainan have been hit by heavy rains, and the rainfall has continued to rise. From September 29 to 30, the rainfall in most parts of central and eastern Hainan exceeded 100 mm, and the rainfall in Qiongzhong, Tunchang, Qionghai, Wanning and other places exceeded 250 mm, causing the water level of Wanquan River to surge. As an important source of water supply for Qionghai City, the water level of Wanquan River rose sharply in a short period of time, and the situation was critical. Faced with the soaring water level, the water levels of Niululing Reservoir and Hongling Reservoir upstream of Wanquan River quickly exceeded the warning line. The local government decided to start emergency flood discharge at 5 am on the 30th to prevent larger-scale floods.
Floods raged, many towns were flooded, and transportation and communications were blocked
After the reservoir released floodwaters, the floods rushed downstream along the Wanquan River, causing 123 villages in 7 towns along the coast of Qionghai to be besieged by floods, especially Shibi Town and Longjiang Town were particularly severely affected. The local communication system was destroyed, and some roads were impassable due to waterlogging, which had a huge impact on rescue and daily transportation. As the floods continued to spread, 42 power lines in the city were interrupted, causing 25,700 users to lose power. At this time, Qionghai has become a "city in the water", and the lives of residents have been seriously affected.
Faced with the floods, Qionghai City quickly launched an emergency response. By the afternoon of the 30th, 7,154 people had been safely transferred to temporary resettlement sites. Through short video platforms and social media, many residents uploaded videos showing that streets, vehicles, and houses were swallowed by floods, and the once busy urban area has now become a vast ocean.
Netizens hotly discussed: the water level continues to rise, and the losses are incalculable
The disaster caused by the flood discharge has caused heated discussions on the Internet. Many netizens left messages describing their personal experiences: "The water level has exceeded two meters." "The water level may rise another 1 to 2 meters, and the flood discharge is expected to continue until tomorrow." Some residents issued an urgent appeal, suggesting that everyone evacuate the dangerous area as soon as possible. Qionghai residents also expressed their helplessness about the disaster: "The water accumulation in Qionghai is seriously beyond expectations. This time it is caused by the flood discharge of Wanquan River. There is nowhere to escape."
Some netizens even shared their personal post-disaster experiences: "My home is next to the Jiaji Bridge. The water has reached the door. The water level in the low-lying area has even entered the first-floor lobby." The property of some residents has been devastated. "The investment in the planting and breeding industries has been basically scrapped, and all vehicles have been submerged. The losses are unimaginable." Someone lamented, "After experiencing the typhoon, I thought it was already bad, but I didn't expect this flood discharge to catch people off guard."
The economy has been hit hard, and the road to recovery is long
For many residents who make a living from agriculture and breeding, the economic blow brought by this flood is particularly heavy. A local resident left a message on social media: "The economic situation was already bad, and now the flood has destroyed our industry." Another resident said helplessly: "There is no escape from the losses caused by this flood, as if all efforts have been swallowed up by the flood."
Currently, the local government is actively organizing rescue and helping the affected people rebuild their lives. According to weather forecasts, the rainfall is expected to gradually weaken in the next few days, providing favorable conditions for post-disaster recovery. However, facing the economic losses and infrastructure damage caused by the flood, the reconstruction and recovery of Qionghai City will be a daunting task.
