Hong Kong has attracted world attention since its return to the motherland.
The chaos caused by the "amendment" incident in 2019 was undoubtedly a major focus at that time.
The actions of some opposition groups and external forces in Hong Kong to disrupt Hong Kong are in sharp contrast to the legitimate and reasonable measures of the SAR government. The conflicts contained in this are worthy of our in-depth exploration.
Hong Kong's "amendment of regulations" was originally a reasonable and legal matter, but it was maliciously smeared.
This incident attracted much attention in August 2019.
At that time, the Hong Kong opposition and a few external forces misrepresented it as sending Hong Kong people to the mainland for trial.
Faced with the widespread controversy caused by the amendment, the SAR government chose to temporarily shelve it. This is undoubtedly a full respect for public opinion. However, this move has been maliciously exploited by some people with ulterior motives.
During the turmoil over Hong Kong's legislative amendments, a large number of false statements slandering China emerged. Many foreign media blindly followed suit and spread false information, resulting in the people's true voices being suppressed.
The turmoil over Hong Kong's legislative amendments developed later and turned into violent activities.
The behavior of those perpetrators has long gone beyond the boundaries of normal demonstrations.
They damaged public facilities and attacked citizens, causing panic and chaos in the streets of Hong Kong.
The forces behind it intend to turn Hong Kong into chaos and thus constrain China's development.
It has been more than 22 years since Hong Kong returned to the motherland in 1997. During this period, the principles of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy have been effectively implemented.
Hong Kong maintains many advantages.
For example, Hong Kong has always maintained its position as an international financial, trade, and shipping center.
Since 1995, for more than 20 years, this economy has always won the title of the freest economy in the world.
The country has also made remarkable achievements in the rule of law, with its rule of law index ranking among the best in the world.
During this period, Hong Kong residents enjoyed unprecedented democratic rights and extensive freedoms.
All this depends on "one country, two systems".
After Hong Kong's return, "one country, two systems" ensured that it received support from the mainland while making full use of its own strengths.
Under the protection of the rule of law, Hong Kong has a good business environment and attracts many international investors.
Taking 2018 as an example, Hong Kong successfully attracted more than US$100 billion in foreign investment. This achievement is inseparable from the stable guarantee of Hong Kong's institutional environment under "one country, two systems".
"One country, two systems" is a holistic concept, and "one country" constitutes the foundation and prerequisite for "two systems".
Some forces in the West always misinterpret it and overemphasize "two systems" and ignore "one country".
Without "one country" as the foundation, it will be difficult for Hong Kong to maintain a stable international situation and rely on strong support from the mainland, and the concept of "two systems" will not be realized.
The prosperity and stability of Hong Kong cannot be separated from the powerful motherland behind it - China. Numerous mainland resources have provided strong support for Hong Kong's construction and progress.
For example, Hong Kong's water and electricity supply relies largely on support from the mainland.
From a national security perspective, without "one country", Hong Kong's security cannot be guaranteed.
If external forces attempt to use Hong Kong to undermine China's stability, the "one country" principle can prompt my country to take corresponding measures to maintain Hong Kong's stability from a national perspective.
In the process of implementing "one country, two systems", there are three bottom lines that cannot be touched.
First, it endangers national sovereignty and security, which is the most fundamental point.
China's sovereignty cannot be infringed and Hong Kong is part of China.
The second is to challenge the central power and the authority of the Basic Law.
The central government has legal status such as jurisdiction over Hong Kong. The Basic Law, as Hong Kong's constitutional law, should be respected.
Third, Hong Kong cannot be used to infiltrate and sabotage the mainland.
Historically, any attempt to challenge these three bottom lines has failed.
This is not only an internal regulation of our country, but also an indispensable factor in ensuring the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong.
Since the handover, the rule of law and development have been the two pillars of Hong Kong's prosperity.
The rule of law is one of Hong Kong's core values. It protects citizens' rights and interests and attracts investment.
Taking Hong Kong's financial industry as a reference, a sound legal system enables many international financial institutions to operate their businesses here with peace of mind.
Development is the fundamental way to solve various problems in Hong Kong.
At a time when Hong Kong's economy is facing many challenges, it is even more important to focus on development.
To restore Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, violence must be severely punished and social order restored.
During the Asian financial crisis, Hong Kong relied on the joint efforts of all sectors of society, adhered to the principle of the rule of law, and relied on its solid development foundation in the past to successfully weather the crisis.
Hong Kong's prosperity and stability are in the common interests of all countries.
Take the United Kingdom as an example. Before Hong Kong's return, the United Kingdom obtained numerous benefits from Hong Kong. After Hong Kong's return, Hong Kong's stability will still have a positive impact on the British business community and other aspects.
The international community should avoid being misled by those with ulterior motives and should recognize and respect China's "one country, two systems" policy.
Those false claims are ultimately untenable.
British wise men should oppose actions that undermine Hong Kong's rule of law and actively contribute to Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.
When other countries in Europe encounter social turmoil, the international community hopes that they can return to peace and tranquility. The reason is the same.
So, how do you think the international community can better assist Hong Kong’s development? How can Hong Kong return to its former prosperity and stability more quickly?
